VAT rates in the GCC

Kuwait No VAT
UAE 5% Since 1 January 2018
Saudi Arabia 15% Since 1 July 2020
Qatar No VAT
Bahrain 10% Since 1 January 2022
Oman 5% Since 16 April 2021

How to use the VAT calculator

  1. Choose Add VAT or Remove VAT. Add VAT when your price is before tax (a quotation to a business). Remove VAT when the price already includes it (a shelf price or a receipt total).
  2. Pick the country: UAE 5%, Saudi Arabia 15%, Bahrain 10% or Oman 5%. The currency and its decimals change with it. Need another rate? Choose Custom.
  3. Type the amount. You get the amount before VAT, the VAT and the total, with the formula used to get there.

The VAT formulas

Adding VAT: VAT = price × rate, and total = price + VAT. For 1,000 AED at 5%: VAT 50 AED, total 1,050 AED.

Removing VAT: price before VAT = total ÷ (1 + rate), and VAT = total − price before VAT. For 1,150 SAR including 15% VAT: 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = 1,000 SAR, so the VAT is 150 SAR.

The most common mistake is taking 15% of a total that already includes VAT. 15% of 1,150 is 172.50, not 150. VAT is always a percentage of the price before VAT.

Rounding and decimals

VAT is rounded to the nearest smallest unit of the currency: two decimals for the UAE dirham and Saudi riyal (fils and halala), three decimals for the Bahraini dinar and Omani rial (fils and baisa). Halves round up, so 0.505 becomes 0.51. This calculator rounds the same way as our tax invoice generator, so the numbers you see here match the invoice.

VAT calculators for each GCC country

Each country page opens with the right rate and currency already selected: UAE VAT calculator (5%), Saudi VAT calculator (15%), Bahrain VAT calculator (10%) and Oman VAT calculator (5%). Kuwait and Qatar have not introduced VAT, so there is nothing to add there. Read is there VAT in Kuwait?

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the price by the VAT rate to get the VAT, then add it to the price. At 5%, 200 AED + 10 AED VAT = 210 AED. In one step: price × 1.05 (or × 1.15 for Saudi Arabia, × 1.10 for Bahrain).
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate: ÷ 1.05 for 5%, ÷ 1.10 for 10%, ÷ 1.15 for 15%. That gives the price before VAT; the difference is the VAT. For example, 575 SAR ÷ 1.15 = 500 SAR, so the VAT is 75 SAR.
Saudi Arabia 15%, Bahrain 10%, the UAE 5% and Oman 5%. Kuwait and Qatar have no VAT yet. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, so check the rules for your goods or services.
The Bahraini dinar and the Omani rial are divided into 1,000 fils or baisa, so amounts and VAT are written with three decimals. The UAE dirham and the Saudi riyal use two.
