How VAT works in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia introduced VAT at 5% in January 2018 and raised it to 15% on 1 July 2020. It is managed by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA). Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass SAR 375,000 a year, and voluntary from SAR 187,500.
Examples at 15%
- Add VAT: 1,000 SAR × 15% = 150 SAR VAT, total 1,150 SAR.
- Remove VAT: 1,150 SAR including VAT ÷ 1.15 = 1,000 SAR before VAT, VAT 150 SAR.
- Common mistake: 15% of 1,150 is 172.50, not the VAT. The VAT inside a total is total × 15 ÷ 115 (about 13.04%).
Prices and invoices in Saudi Arabia
Consumer prices are normally shown including VAT, while invoices must break the total into the amount before VAT, the VAT and the total. Since the ZATCA e-invoicing (Fatoora) rules, simplified tax invoices carry a QR code. Our tax invoice generator adds the ZATCA QR code for free.
