How VAT works in Bahrain

Bahrain introduced VAT at 5% in January 2019 and raised it to 10% on 1 January 2022. It is managed by the National Bureau for Revenue (NBR). Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass BHD 37,500 a year, and voluntary from BHD 18,750.

Examples at 10%

  • Add VAT: 250.500 BHD × 10% = 25.050 BHD VAT, total 275.550 BHD.
  • Remove VAT: 33.000 BHD including VAT ÷ 1.10 = 30.000 BHD before VAT, VAT 3.000 BHD.
  • Shortcut: the VAT inside a total is total × 10 ÷ 110 (about 9.09%).

Three decimals

The Bahraini dinar has 1,000 fils, so prices, VAT and totals are written with three decimals, for example 12.375 BHD. Many tools round to two decimals and get Bahraini VAT wrong; this calculator and our tax invoice generator always use three.
