How VAT works in Oman
Oman introduced VAT at 5% on 16 April 2021. It is managed by the Oman Tax Authority. Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass OMR 38,500 a year, and voluntary from OMR 19,250.
Examples at 5%
- Add VAT: 84.750 OMR × 5% = 4.2375 → 4.238 OMR VAT, total 88.988 OMR.
- Remove VAT: 21.000 OMR including VAT ÷ 1.05 = 20.000 OMR before VAT, VAT 1.000 OMR.
- Shortcut: the VAT inside a total is total × 5 ÷ 105 (about 4.76%).
Three decimals
The Omani rial has 1,000 baisa, so prices and VAT have three decimals, for example 4.238 OMR. This calculator and our tax invoice generator round to the nearest baisa. See also how to make an Oman invoice and our guide to currency decimals on GCC invoices.
