Invoice terms in English and Arabic: Invoice / فاتورة, Tax Invoice / فاتورة ضريبية, Due Date / تاريخ الاستحقاق

In Saudi Arabia, a tax invoice must include Arabic, and across the GCC most customers, accountants and government offices expect it. Even if your business works in English, you will regularly need the right Arabic term for "due date", "VAT number" or "amount in words". Machine translation often gets these wrong.

This glossary lists the terms used on real GCC invoices, with the wording that ZATCA uses on Saudi e-invoices and that is widely accepted in the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar. Not sure whether your invoice has to be in Arabic at all? Read does an invoice have to be in Arabic? first.

A bilingual invoice, put together

Here is how these terms look on a real bilingual tax invoice: English on the left, Arabic on the right, with the totals labelled in both languages and a ZATCA QR code.

You don't need to type the Arabic yourself. In our tax invoice generator choose the ZATCA Bilingual template, or switch any invoice in the free invoice generator to Arabic. All labels, the right-to-left layout and the amount in words are filled in for you.

Common mistakes

  • Using فاتورة instead of فاتورة ضريبية on a VAT invoice. In VAT countries the title matters.
  • Translating "due date" as تاريخ الانتهاء (expiry date). The correct term is تاريخ الاستحقاق.
  • Mixing Arabic and Western digits in the same amount (١٢٥.750). Choose one style; Western digits (0–9) are standard on GCC invoices and in accounting systems.
  • Letting the PDF reverse the Arabic letters, so the words appear disconnected or backwards. This happens with tools that don't support right-to-left text; always check the PDF, not only the screen.
  • Writing the currency only as a symbol. Spell out the currency in words: دينار كويتي, ريال سعودي, درهم إماراتي.

Frequently asked questions

What is "invoice" in Arabic?

فاتورة (fatoora). A tax invoice is فاتورة ضريبية, and e-invoicing is الفوترة الإلكترونية. That is why Saudi Arabia's e-invoicing programme is called FATOORA.

What is "VAT number" in Arabic?

الرقم الضريبي or, more formally, رقم التسجيل الضريبي (tax registration number).

How do you write "amount in words" in Arabic?

المبلغ كتابةً, written as فقط + the amount + the currency + لا غير.

Is "quotation" عرض سعر or تسعيرة?

Both are understood. عرض سعر is the more formal and widely used term on documents; تسعيرة is common in speech.

Terms follow the labels used on ZATCA tax invoices and common GCC business practice. Spelling of some terms varies slightly between countries.
